Launching a universal home charging station! Is Tesla giving in?
Tesla launches universal home charging station, making concessions to eliminate charging port controversy
Tesla has always been a leader in the electric vehicle market, but in the North American market, there has been controversy over charging interfaces between Tesla and other automakers . Tesla advocates the use of its own NACS interface, while other manufacturers prefer the CCS1 interface, resulting in incompatibility between the two interfaces, which has caused trouble for consumers. However, Tesla seems to have made concessions recently and launched a new home charger called “Universal Wall Connector” that supports compatibility with both NACS and CCS1 interfaces. The design of this charger is not complicated, with only one more adapter. Users only need to choose a suitable charging gun and replace the charging head to charge easily. This move can be said to be an important concession made by Tesla to eliminate the controversy over the charging interface.
This “Universal Wall Connector” home charger is not only compatible with two interfaces, but also has improved charging performance. It supports 240V voltage and has a maximum charging power of 11.5kW, which is 1kW higher than the current maximum power of 10.5kW for charging piles . Calculated at 12 kilometers per hour, this means that the vehicle charges 12 kilometers more per hour, greatly shortening the charging time. In addition, the charging pile also has an automatic sensing function, which can automatically pop up the Tesla charging port when the vehicle approaches ; through the mobile phone application, users can manage charging plans and power usage; and the charging pile can also be upgraded at any time through OTA system, providing more new features and gameplay. In short, this new home charging pile is not only highly compatible, but also has higher charging power and intelligent functions, allowing Tesla users to charge more conveniently.
The many highlights of the new universal home charging station
1. Strong compatibility: Tesla ‘s “Universal Wall Connector” home charging pile has the characteristics of strong compatibility. Whether it is Tesla ‘s NACS interface or other manufacturers’ CCS1 interface, it can be perfectly matched with this charging pile . Users no longer need to worry about choosing a charging interface, and it is very convenient to flexibly replace the charging head.
2. Improved charging performance: The new charging pile supports 240V voltage and has a maximum charging power of 11.5kW. This is an increase of 1kW compared to the current maximum power of 10.5kW. In actual use, this means that the vehicle can increase its mileage by 12 kilometers per hour of charging, greatly improving efficiency.
3. Intelligent functions: The charging pile has an automatic sensing function. When a vehicle approaches, the Tesla charging port will automatically pop up, eliminating the trouble of manual operation. In addition, users can manage charging plans and power usage through mobile applications, and easily grasp the charging progress and power usage. The charging pile can also upgrade the system through OTA at any time, providing users with more new functions and gameplay, making the charging experience more diverse.
4. Reasonable price: The new home charging station is priced at US$595 (about RMB 4,332), which is relatively reasonable compared to the charger that only supports Tesla’s charging standard NACS (priced at US$475) and the charger that supports the North American charging standard CCS1 (priced at US$550). It is confidently predicted that this home charging station is likely to become a hot-selling product in Tesla Mall.
Summarize
Tesla ‘s new home charging station “Universal Wall Connector” can be said to be a product of great significance. By resolving the controversy and compatibility issues of charging interfaces, Tesla provides consumers with more convenient and flexible charging options. In addition, the charging station ‘s increased charging power, intelligent functions and reasonable prices are also eye-catching. This move by Tesla is not only conducive to improving users’ charging experience, but also helps promote the rapid development and popularization of the electric vehicle industry. I believe that with the continuous advancement of technology and the improvement of consumers’ acceptance of electric vehicles , the convenience and intelligence of charging facilities in the future will achieve greater breakthroughs, bringing users a more convenient, efficient and comfortable charging experience. As an industry leader, Tesla will continue to lead the development and innovation of charging technology and provide users with better services and experiences.

This is our second Wall Connector. We have two EV’s. Both are parked outside because we have no garage. We have EVSE’s for each car. We got our first Tesla Wall Connector almost two years ago when we replaced a Nissan Leaf with a Tesla. It has worked flawlessly and has held up in the weather. When our second Leaf was totaled, we got a second Tesla. The Universal Wall Connector can charge any EV with its built in J1772 adapter. It can be monitored through the Tesla app and is competitively priced. Easy to configure with the app

The fact that this could be set up to work with a range of amperage settings made this invaluable to me. Other than that, nice design and does what it should. Excellent.

My husband got this because he knew it worked well with our MachE, and was less than the Ford charger

I added this Tesla Universal Wall Charger for my Cadillac Lyriq, this allows me to be ready for now and for the future when the J1772 will be phased out and all newer EV will be using the Tesla connector, I won’t have to change my wall charger.

Using it with a BMW IX 50 and no issues charging at max speed (48A 11kWh). Works great and you can adjust the max amps from the Tesla app but its a pain that you have to connect to the EVSE directly and not over the internet to change such settings.
You can however use the Tesla app to get charging stats but not to change the EVSE config.
Expensive but it does work with charging non-Teslas. Able to charge in summers in Texas weather without issue.

Lo puedo usar en mi Mach E, también en tesla, tiene un mecanismo que no se puede sacar el adaptador osea está en el cargador o en el conector pero no lo puedes llevar en tu vehículo.

It has an adapter, so it can charge the Tesla and the BMW which is really nice.

It worked the first time i tried it BUT!
Adapter stuck in universal wall connector. Charger pulsing green light indicating SSID broadcasting ready to commission. It’s already commissioned and I can see it on the app. I tried to add it again but it says it’s already added so I can’t add it twice. Tried to remove it to add again, but there’s no option to remove it from the app. I can charge my Tesla no problem, but the adapter is stuck in the wall connector I’m unable to charge my non Tesla.
I had a Gen 2 tesla wall connector for a year before this, removed it and installed the universal version to charge my non Tesla. Apparently the universal version has this common issue (do a quick Google search and a bunch of people have had the same issue).
Tried power cycling the circuit breaker but still same issue.

This EV charger is well made and if you have a Tesla, it makes sense to get a Tesla Charger. You will find some no-name brand charges for a bit cheaper but it’s not worth the risk. I was on the fence on getting this charger (Universal Wall Connector) versus the Tesla Wall Connector (only NACS plug) for $120 less. This does the same thing the Tesla Wall Connector does but comes with a built-in NACS to J1772 adapter that is securely locked to the charger. For those with the Cybertruck, the Universal Wall Connector is the only charger that is capable of utilizing the Telsa PowerShare (home backup power). If you don’t care for the J1772 adapter or the PowerShare, you can save some money by opting for the Tesla Wall Connector. Then if you need to charge a EV with a J1772 in the future, you can also purchase an adapter. For me, it was worth the extra $120 for this charger because I am getting a high quality NACS to J1772 adapter that is built into the charger. The adapter does locks into the charger when not in use and also locks into the NACS plug if charging with this adapter.
Installation:
Consult with an license electrical before installation. I opted to go with 6-AWG THHN copper wires and a 60-amp breaker for my install. If you use Romex, you may have to go with 4-AWG wires. Only three wires are required for the install (2 hots and a ground wire – no neutral wire needed). 6-AWG is the minimum size wire that Tesla recommends if you plan to charge at the 48A max output. The location of the Universal Wall Connecter is only a couple feet from my breaker panel. I purchase 6 ft of wires and use 3/4″ flexible conduct. The mounting box has a pre-drilled top and bottom knockouts made for 3/4 conducts. If you go with a larger size conduit, you will have to drill a larger opening on mounting box. There are also some pre-marked holes to drill in the back of the mounting box if you prefer to have the wires come out from the wall.
Usage:
The charger works well. My Model 3 is set…
